A Seabury moment

Handles…one in each hand…ends down…rope behind….knees bent…head straight…looking forward...big arm swing….wait until it begins to pass your eyes…..then……Jump!

The rope swept under his feet and he, again, surprised himself! My breath gave way and I choked back a tear.

My grin…..his grin….our laughter held onto the moment.

This is what Seabury has given me: The opportunity to help children grow tenacity and the joy in sharing moments like these.

I have always loved teaching! Most of my teaching career has been within the public school system. I cherished those children and worked hard to help them connect their dots. The challenge and frustration I experienced from the larger schools and larger class sizes came from trying to know each individual child well enough to create and adjust my teaching to specific needs. Time was never on my side as I squeezed children in at recesses to give them the individualized instruction that would bolster their learning.

Trying to create community in a large school with large classes and many teachers presents conflicts too: Expectations, rules, rapport between students, students and staff and amongst staff curbed and interfered with everyone’s best intentions.

Teaching at Seabury has been a gift to my career because almost everything I have believed and strived for through my forty years of teaching has come true. Sure, we are not perfect. Yes, Seabury needs to continue to grow and move forward. But what stands out about Seabury for me is this safe place where children and teachers and support staff know that we are perfectly imperfect. While we strive to grow, we know we are accepted for who we are.

My little student jumped again. This time he jumped two times in a row. His tiny body could barely contain his excitement. His eyes sparkled! “You know what, “he exclaimed, “last week, I used to hate jump rope but now I love it! I really love it!”
