Simple Machines

9 a.m. to noon

Grades 2-5; $65

Registration deadline: Feb. 18

(Earlybird registration discount)

Simple machines make work easier.  Explore the physics of inclined planes, levers, wedges, wheels and axles, pulleys and screws through hands-on activities and experiments.  In a tasty demonstration, we will make simple machine models out of candy!  Explore the laws of physics at play with each simple machine and create inventions that are based on simple machines.  Learn to use “Scamper” (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, Rearrange/Reverse) and design thinking models to develop creative thinking skills and discover innovative ideas. This is a class for kids who love to DO science!

Crazy Contraptions

12:30-3:30 p.m.

Grades 2-5; $65

Registration deadline: Feb. 18

(Earlybird registration discount)

Create a Rube Goldberg machine! While simple machines make work easier, Rube Goldberg devices make simple tasks as complicated as possible.  Using materials from Seabury’s MakerSpace, design your own Rube Goldberg device for solving a problem or doing a job in a crazy, convoluted way.  Think outside the box to make chain reactions, explore creative uses of everyday materials, and have a blast building! We will end the day demonstrating our crazy, complicated devices for each other and cartooning our results.

Instructors – Seabury faculty members: Ruth Maitlen and Kim Feehan

 * Students staying for both sections will have a supervised lunch/recess. Bring a sack lunch.

Seabury follows COVID protocols to protect students and staff.  Information will be provided upon registration. Check HERE for detailed information about Seabury's COVID guidelines.
