SUMMER at SEABURY
Led by Seabury teachers and local experts, Summer at Seabury camps offer elementary and middle school students enriching, challenging summer learning experiences in a fun, camp environment. Camps run from 9 am to 3 pm daily. Before and after care is available from 7am -9am and 3pm-6pm for an additional fee. Students who register for 5 or more camps receive a discounted registration price.

Summer at Seabury 2010
Have you ever wanted to build a rocket, learn photography, create a LEGO city, make a film, or learn to cook? Summer at Seabury enrichment camps make learning fun and engaging for children entering kindergarten through grade 8.
Summer at Seabury's 2010 schedule is currently under development and promises to be more exciting than ever. Camps will start the week of June 14 and will run each week through August 13 (there will be no camps the week of the 4th of July holiday, July 5-9). Three camps will be offered each week, one for students entering K-2nd grade, one for students entering 3rd - 5th grade, and a middle school camp for students entering 6th - 8th grade.

Grade level recommendations are based on the grade the student will be entering in 2009-2010.

Camp Descriptions
Week of June 15 – 19
Grades K-2
Meet the Author: Explore a new picture book author/illustrator each day. Read books together and then have fun doing art science, music and cooking connected to that author’s work. Literature comes alive as campers are inspired by their favorite authors.
Taught by: Rebecca Young, Seabury’s librarian, artist & Tacoma News Tribune children’s book reviewer.
Grades 3-5
Drama Kings and Queens: This is your chance to be a playwright and star!! Participate in lots of fun drama games, movement and voice work while learning some of the history of theater and how to stage dramatic productions. The week ends with the performance of a student created skit.
Taught by: Tamara Ritchie, Seabury’s 2nd grade teacher and drama program teacher
Grades 6-7
Rocket Gliders: Have you ever wanted to launch a rocket? Fly a glider? Do both at the same time? Learn the basics of flight through the use of a glider that is rocket assisted (like the space shuttle). Build paper airplanes and fly gliders. Blast off will take place on Friday.

Week of June 22 – 26
Grades K-2
Make a Mess, Make Art: We’ll get our hands dirty and have fun while we create. Art projects might include painting with various mediums, papier mache, collage and other cool stuff. Read books about art and artists and then make your own masterpieces!

Greek Mythology: Gods and Goddesses are coming to Summer at Seabury! Using art, literature, history and geography, we will delve deeply into the myths and legends of Greek mythology. Learning about life on Mt. Olympus has never been so much fun!
Taught by: Mary O’Brien, Seabury’s 5th grade teacher
Grades 6-7
Experimental Ensemble: Interactive media and performance art are fused in this unique camp experience. Campers will work together to create unique, original performances using common technology.
Taught by: Adam Brock, actor, director, and MFA candidate in the Brooklyn College, NY, Performance and Interactive Media Arts program.
Week of June 29 – July 3
Grades K-2
Circus Arts: Have you ever wanted to create your own circus? Try your hand at balancing, juggling, walking on stilts and much more with local performer, Mario Lorenz. Campers will work with Mario to create their own circus performance to share with parents on July 3.

Grades 3-5
Model Rockets 101: You’ll be flying high in this Summer at Seabury camp! Safely build and launch your own model rocket. Learn principles of rocketry and flight, and see how your designs work in practice flights. The big blast off will take place on Friday, July 3.

Grades 6-7
Writing and Drama: This is your chance to write and perform and original dramatic production. Learn about plot development and work as a team to create a script and perform your own play. Practice drama skills through scene blocking, rehearsing and games. Perform your play on Friday, July 3 for your adoring audience!

Week of July 6-10
Grades K-2
Experience Latin America: Learn and practice Spanish as we explore the culture of a different Latin American country each day. Explore the art, food, traditions and people of Mexico as well as countries in Central and South America in this fun, interactive camp.

Grades 3-5
Film Camp: Ever wanted to be a movie or TV star? Here’s your chance! Work together as a production team to record and edit short drama and comedy sketches. Campers will also work together to create their own zany TV commercial! Learn all the aspects of film production including writing, acting, producing, directing and filming.

Grades 6-7
Architecture: How do bridges and buildings work? Design and build architectural models as campers learn principles of design and engineering. Take a new look at the structures around you as campers develop an appreciation for architectural elements and the range of possible designs.

LEGO® Camp: Here’s your chance to spend a week in a room filled with LEGO building with a professional LEGO creator! Dan Parker, one of just a few Certified LEGO Professionals in the WORLD will share some of his creations and will build with you as you create cities and models and more. Learn building tricks and techniques, and try some new LEGO designs!

Archaeology: Dig into the past and see how we learn about the peoples and places that came before us. Experience the excitement of participating in an archaeological dig. Piece together the puzzle of s mystery civilization using the tools and techniques used by real archaeologists!

Fused Glass Art: Glass slumping is the art of fusing glass in a kiln to create beautiful and intricate designs. Seattle based fused glass artist and chemist, Marja Huhta, will work with campers to explore the chemistry and art of fusing glass. Explore a number of glass slumping techniques as you create colorful projects such as magnets, coasters, a suncatcher and a bowl.

Advanced LEGO® Camp: Take your LEGO building skills to a new level in this advanced camp for middle school students. Experience French: Immerse yourself in all things French! Learn about French culture, listen to French pop music, cook and eat French food, and learn some basics of speaking French.

Grades 3-5
Meet the Author: This camp is for older students who want to dig deeper into the work of their favorite authors. Explore a new picture book author/illustrator whose books are aimed at upper elementary students each day. Read books together and then have fun doing art science, music and cooking connected to that author’s work. Literature comes alive as campers are inspired by their favorite authors.

Grades 6-7
Photography and Frisbee: In this unique blend of art and recreation, campers will spend the morning learning photography and the afternoon playing Frisbee with two local experts. In photography, make your own pinhole camera, lean the principles of camera operation and digital photography, and apply techniques for taking great photos. You’ll take and manipulate your own digital photos. Use your pinhole camera to take photos on film, and develop them yourselves. In the afternoon, head out of the darkroom to take part in Frisbee sports including Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee golf!
***Students are required to bring a digital camera

Grades K-2
Watercolor Fun: (This is a FULL Day Camp!) Explore wash and brush techniques for creating beautiful watercolor paintings with a local, award-winning watercolor artist and teacher. Learn about the science and art of working with transparent watercolors while creating your own masterpieces. Paint landscapes, abstracts and everyday things in this engaging camp.
