SUMMER at SEABURY
Led by Seabury teachers and local experts, Summer at Seabury camps offer elementary age students enriching, challenging learning experiences in a fun, safe, caring environment. In general, two camps will be offered each week, one for children who have completed kindergarten through second grade and another for children who have completed third through fifth grade. If you have questions about grade level requirements, please call us. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Before and after care is available from 7am -9am and 3pm-6pm for an additional fee. Students who register for 5 or more camps receive a discounted registration price.

June 16-20
Circus Arts (K-4th grade)
Join renowned local performance artists Mario Lorenz and Fred Tse for fun experiences with the circus arts. Juggling, stilt walking and more will make this a fun, interactive week. Camp will end with a performance for parents on Friday afternoon.
The Amazing Race (3rd-5th grade)
The Amazing Race is the most mathematically spectacular race you have ever seen! But there is more than speed to this race. Teams of students will work together on math challenges and apply them to things like building a race track and modeling race cars! We'll also look at math in different cultures... all a part of the human RACE! Nicola Parker, an instructor at Green River Community College leads this week. She loves making math fun for kids of all ages.
June 23-27
Drama Queens and Kings (K-2nd Grade)
Seabury's 2nd/3rd grade teacher, Tamara Ritchie, offers a complete drama experience focused on improvisation and working together to tell a story. Students will learn history of the theater, movement, voice work, staging and lots of fun drama games. The week will end with a culmintaing project, a student created skit that focuses on skills learned throughout the week.
A Kaleidoscope of Arts and Crafts (1st-3rd Grade)
*9am-noon only
Be prepared to get crafty and messy! This day camp is for the arts and crafts lover. Children will get the chance to experience many different projects such as pottery, papermaking, tie dye and garden art. Students will mosaic, make beads and try a life size portrait. Taught by Seabury's Cathy Moeller, who has many years working with children teaching pottery and Jackie Vlasak, a local mosaic artist who works with children in the White River School District.
Model Rockets 101 (3rd-5th grade)
In this class students will be taught the essentials to successfully and safely build and launch a model rocket. Blast off will be the last day of class and everyone is invited to see the students launch! Taught by Todd Ritchie, a model rocket enthusiast, pilot, teacher and counselor.
July 7-11
LEGO® Camp (K-2nd Grade)
Spend the week creating and building with Certified LEGO® professional Dan Parker. Campers will learn techniques for planning, designing and building LEGO creations. Dan Parker works with students and creates displays throughout the country. His studio, City Blocks, is located in Tacoma's Freighthouse Square.
Cryptozoology (3rd-5th Grade)
Explore legendary animals like Sasquatch, the Chupacabra, the Moth Man, the Loch Ness Monster, Champy, the Thunderbird and more through art, storytelling and scientific research. Discover that some legendary animals turn out to be real, like the Giant Squid! The week will culminate with the creation of a CryptoZoo. Taught by Seabury's 4th grade teacher, Paul Gonzenbach.
July 14-18
Writing and Drama - Fractured Fairytales (K-2nd Grade)
To be taken in conjunction with Drama Queens and Kings or on its own. This week will include many of the drama skills and games from the previous class, as well as writing and performing an original "fractured fairytale." Students will learn about plot development, writing dialogue and work as a team to create an original script. They will then practice their drama skills as they learn about blocking a scene, rehearsing and performing their play at the end of the week. Taught by Seabury's 2nd/3rd grade teacher, Tamara Ritchie.
Rocket Gliders (3rd-5th Grade)
Build and fly your own rocket glider. Students will learn the basics of flight through the use of a glider that is rocket assisted (imagine the space shuttle). During the week students will build paper airplanes and fly gliders. Blast off will be the last day of class and everyone is invited to see the students launch. It is helpful, but not required, that students have an understanding of model rockets for this class. Taught by Todd Ritchie, a model rocket enthusiast, pilot, teacher and counselor.
July 21-25
Meet the Author - Fiction (K-2nd Grade)
Join Seabury Librarian, Becky Young, for a week of fun with some of the best of children's fiction books. Experience a new author/illustrator each day and learn about how they make their books. Classes will include a lot of hands on projects including art, science experiments, music and cooking, all connected to each author's work. In addition to her work as Seabury's librarian, Becky writes children's book reviews for the Tacoma News Tribune.
Watercolor (3rd-5th Grade)
*9-noon only. Sign up for one or two weeks.
Join local artist and Seabury's after school watercolor teacher, Scott Mulholland for an exploration of watercolor techniques. Learn the different wash and brush techniques while creating landscapes, abstracts and paintings of everyday things.
Ceramics (3rd-5th Grade)
*1-3pm only. This is a two week session. Students must sign up for both weeks.
Create beautiful clay masks with artist and teacher Bobbi Frankel. These amazing masks will be fired and finished with beads, wire and ribbons. Students will also create clay self-portraits and small molded bowls. To allow for pieces to be fired and glazed this is a 2 week class. Bobbi is a ceramic artist and long time teacher of highly capable children.
July 28-August 1

Experience French (K-2nd Grade)
Spend the week immersed in all things French. Teacher Halley Griffin recently spent a year studying in France, and will create a truly French experience for campers including listening to French pop music for kids, cooking projects, a celebration of the Fete des Rois, reading books about French Kids and life in France, learning some basics of French language , art projects and much more. Halley is a recent graduate of the UW. Her love of French began in her elementary years as a Seabury student.
Acting for Film (3rd-5th Grade)
Learn about the typical audition for a film/television show or TV commercial. See yourself and your friends act on camera. Develop an industry standard resume and 8x10 headshot. Discover what it feels like to be a working actor or actress. Taught by Adam Brock, a graduate from the Evergreen State College with a concentration in Performing Arts. He has trained with members of the SITI Company and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and Stetson Studios in New York City , as well as the FAMU film school in Prague, CZ.
August 11-15
Obstacle Course (K-2nd Grade)
The biggest obstacle to fun is in your brain. Learn what to do and how to think when you're bored! Students are encouraged to explore crafty and cunning means for creating loads of fun. Taught by Adam Brock, a graduate from the Evergreen State College with a concentration in Performing Arts. He has trained with members of the SITI Company and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and Stetson Studios in New York City , as well as the FAMU film school in Prague, CZ.
Lettuce Right! (3rd-5th Grade)
Join Rachel Eskesen on an adventure with words as we experience and create poetry and short stories. We will be using our environment and creativity to explore the written word and flexible nature of language. Rachel is a graduate of California Lutheran University. This is her third year as a Summer at Seabury instructor.
August 18-22
