Healthy bodies & minds
This is how our lower school PE teacher, Nancy Chapa, who has more than 35 years of teaching experience, describes the goals of Seabury's program:
In our physical education classes at Seabury, we take play seriously. It is through play that we learn about ourselves, connect with others, build social, emotional and physical skills and grow self -confidence. It is our goal for Seabury students to develop knowledge, skills, confidence and desire to make healthy choices throughout their lives.
Our middle schoolers use the Tacoma Center Y for their PE activities. As you'll read in Head of School Sandi Wollum's article below, that involves many different healthy mind and body skills - including assimilating successfully into the adults-only facility.
We know our students need to move - and not just in PE, so even in the upper grades, they spend as much (or more) time out of their desks as in them. It's not unusual to walk through a first grade classroom and see a child standing up to write a story. Discipline rarely involves missing recess. Kids need time outside and time to socialize with friends
Many of our after-school enrichment activities and summer classes involve movement. In the fall, we finished the second year of a successful and popular after-school cross-country program. Here's a video slide show from last season.
Many of our students of all ages participate in outside sports teams and athletic activities. We celebrate that and encourage them to share their excitement and accomplishments. Just this morning in gathering we were treated to a flamenco dance and a tae kwon do demonstration. We'll highlight a few more young athletes later in this newsletter.
