Cultural education

During the first semester, as part of our middle school's study of world religions, all three grade levels visited places of worship all around the Puget Sound area, including a Jewish temple, Catholic church, Baptist church, a Sikh center, Hindu cultural center, Islamic center and more.
This semester, the middle school will participate in the 9th Annual Global Classrooms International Middle School Model UN Conference in New York, representing the countries of Kenya and Israel.
At the lower school this year, first and second graders have studied exploration and third through fifth, ancient cultures. And at Seabury, we don't just study these topics, we live them across the curriculum. Math for first and second grade classes involved collections of treasure brought from to be used as manipulatives through the months and during science those same classes built solar compasses. Third graders learned Sumerian writing. Fourth and fifth graders made spectacular Egyptian funerary masks. All the classes have been on numerous field experiences to take advantage of the cultural education opportunities in our area.
We also bring the cultures and cultural experiences of people in the Seabury community into our educational experiences. Just a couple of examples: One of our families had a cousin from Zimbabwe visit in December. She spoke to students as young as pre-k about life in her country. This Friday, our all-school gathering is focusing on Central and South America, with presentations that include a slide show on a faculty member's recent Habitat for Humanity trip to Guatemala.
It's tough in a brief article to encapsulate all the ways we incorporate cultural education into the Seabury experience. Find out more (and see lots of photos) by reading back through some of our classroom blog entries and Facebook posts. Links to all of them can be found at the bottom of our home page.
