PreKindergarten Program

In a classroom that immerses 4 year old children in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, Seabury’s prekindergarten program is designed for children to create, wonder, and discover the complexities of the world around them.

Recognizing that bright preK students can often think about big ideas that are far beyond their ability to write or draw or read, Seabury's preK program emphasizes experiential learning that allows students to learn without the limits and explore big ideas while developing strong academic skills.

The prekindergarten classroom provides a rich, stimulating environment where learning is doing.  PreK students are encouraged to ask questions as well as discover answers as they wonder, explore, experiment, create, and grow.  Learning in the preK classroom is a joy-filled experience.  One parent remarked, “My son loves the preK program because his teacher never underestimates what a 4 year old can do.”

Seabury School is committed to meeting the needs of the whole child: intellectual, social-emotional, and physical.  Learning feels like play in the prekindergarten classroom, and while play times appear spontaneous, the classroom environment is carefully designed to encourage play in a way that develops imagination and creativity, curricular concepts and skills, cooperation and social skills, gross and small motor skills, collaboration, problem solving, independence and self care.  Units of study are based on topics of interest to the students and the world around them.  They are multidisciplinary, combining literature, science, social studies, writing and math, and giving students opportunities to explore complex ideas in depth.  Students develop skills in literacy, writing and math through individual and small group work tailored to each child's readiness.  Seabury's program is designed to be free of ceilings - if a 4 year old has started reading and is ready for more complex material, that is offered,  If s/he is not yet reading but is interested in knowing every detail about bugs, there are opportunities to explore and learn in depth, while working on reading readiness at an appropriate level of challenge for that student. This balanced approach supports all aspects of growth and development for four year olds.
